I am a Teacher on Special Assignment (TOSA) for Los Gatos Saratoga Union High School District. My official role is "Instructional Coach," which is pretty broad. My role is to support all subject area teachers for our two high school district. A major component is to support teachers in implementation of new educational technology.
Prior to taking on the role of TOSA, I taught for 10 years. For five yeas I was teaching at Saratoga High School in Saratoga, California where I taught Biology to 9th and 10th graders, and Anatomy and Physiology to 11th and 12th graders. Prior to that I taught (Honors) Biology, AP Bio, and Biotechnology at Gilroy High School.
I think of myself as an innovative teacher, and I'm always looking for the next best way to improve my classes and my instruction. Early in my teaching career my big leap was flipping all of my biology classes and making all lectures as vodcasts. It transformed the way I teach, hooked me on edtech, and inspired me to find new and innovative ways to take make my classes even better.
After my second year at Saratoga, my next big leap was trying a 20 Time Project/ Genius Hour/ Passion Project in my Anatomy and Physiology classes. Initially I created this blog to document my process of implementing the project, but after seeing the power and potential of using a blog, I then decided to use this blog to document and share what I was doing in both my Biology and Anatomy and Physiology classes. I figured I might as well use this platform to continue sharing new technologies and ideas I was trying in my classroom, and hopefully network with those who are doing the same or want to try these approaches.
It was hard to maintain the blog. Life got busy and next thing I knew, it was a 2 year hiatus.
Now that I've taken on the role of TOSA for my district, this blog is evolving yet again. Now the focus will broaden to showcase good instructional practices I see at our schools and beyond. I'll share here videos and emails I send to our staff. I'll also use this blog think through some larger topics. Who knows how this blog will continue to evolve...
